The name “mbare,” drawn from the Shona language of Zimbabwe, means “a gathering of things” or “marketplace.” Founded by Robbie Stewart, who grew up in Harare, Mbare was created from a vision of supporting sustainable income for artisans and communities beyond the formal economy, grounded in a long-held belief in trade, not aid.
